How spliced attic beams work

A full-length steel beam usually can't be carried up the stairs or through the attic hatch of an existing house. A spliced beam is cut in two or three pieces with bolted end-plates, so it goes up in pieces and is bolted together in the attic.

What is a spliced attic beam?

A spliced attic beam is a steel beam made in two or three lengths that are joined with bolted end-plate splices. The pieces are light enough to carry up through the house and bolt together in the attic, so you can fit a full-span beam for an attic conversion without a crane.

Which steel sections do you supply?

Two standard universal beam (UB) sections: 203×133×25 UB (25 kg/m, spans 4.0 to 6.5 m) and the stiffer 254×146×31 UB (31 kg/m, spans 4.0 to 9.0 m). Spans outside this range or other sections can be quoted on request.

How much does an attic beam cost?

The live price on the website starts at €525 ex VAT for the 203×133×25 UB and €630 ex VAT for the 254×146×31 UB, and includes one splice, sandblasting, painting and bolts. Longer spans, extra splices, drilling and wall plates add to the price. VAT at 23% is added at checkout.

Do I need an engineer to specify the beam?

Yes. We supply the steel, but your engineer or architect should specify and sign off the beam size for your job. Splice design calculations are available on request for your engineer to review.

What is included in the price?

The beam cut to your span, bolted end-plate splices with M20 Grade 8.8 bolts, sandblasting and paint. Optional extras are drilled holes (6 mm for screwing timber, 13 mm for bolting timber) and wall plates.

Do you deliver, and where?

Yes, we deliver across Ireland from Lusk, Co. Dublin. Delivery is a flat €100 within about 30 minutes' drive of Lusk and €3 per km beyond that, and the website gives you a delivery quote from your address. You can also collect for free from Lusk (Eircode K45 KF96) by arrangement.
